I can't find your statues - Mikel to his Former teammates

A former Super Eagles Captain John Mikel Obi has called out his former Chelsea teammates Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou for not inviting him to Ivory Coast GAANT FOOTBALL reports.

Mikel Obi arrived the West African country of Ivory Coast few hours ago as he will partake in the 2024 AFCON draw ceremony in Abidjan slated for tomorrow.

Mikel, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou were teammates at Chelsea when they helped the London club win its first ever UEFA Champions League after defeating German giant Bayern in n their backyard in 2012. Drogba had left for the China Super League after the historic season in search of greener pastures, and so was Mikel and Kalou few years after.

The 2013 AFCON winner, in a video posted online by Nigeria’s media giant Brila, Mikel was seen cruising around the city of Ivory Coast in a car.

According to the Nigerian, he had expected to see the statues of Drogba and Kalou somewhere in Abidjan, but couldn’t find any.

What Mikel Obi said about city of Ivory Coast

“City of Ivory Coast. Beautiful, I’ve never been here. Have asked Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou to invite me, but they never did,” he said.

“I thought I was going to see their two statues here, both of them. But I saw nothing.”

He jokingly added, “Immediately you land in a Nigerian airport, the first thing you’ll see is my statue; trust me.”

Mikel is just one of the many retired players who will be at the AFCON draws. Also a former Zambia international Rainford Kalaba, who inspired his county to victory in2012, will also be there.

Meanwhile the former Nigeria Captain who was in the Super Eagles team that won Nigeria’s third AFCON title in 2013 has urged the Super Eagles to bring home the trophy as seen in a video shared by CAF on their X (formerly Twitter) page.

Nigeria are in pot two alongside Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and DR Congo. And there is every possibility of having Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia in the same group. The draw event will take place at the new Parc Des Expositions venue in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Thursday Oct 13, 2023 by 7pm.
