Transfer : Flying Eagles-eligible CB joins Southampton after release by Arsenal


According to official website, Championship club Southampton have announced the signing of highly-rated Flying Eagles-eligible central defender Zach Awe.

The hard tackling 2004-born player has joined Southampton on a three-year contract, until June 30, 2026, after spending eleven years at the Arsenal academy.

Southampton confirmed that they saw off competition from several clubs to land the signature of the Hale End Academy product.

Arsenal offered Awe fresh terms to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium, but he decided to embark on a new chapter in his career in search of first team football.

Having said that, the St Mary's outfit have informed that the centre-back will begin his career at the Saints with the U21 squad.

He made 31 appearances in the Premier League 2 during his time at Arsenal, and was on target on two occasions.

Although Awe trained with Arsenal first team several times, he did not get to make his professional debut before departing the north London club after his contract expired on June 30, 2023.

Awe is the sixth player of Nigerian descent currently on Southampton books, He will not be eligible for the next Under 20 World Cup because he was born before 2005.
